Reminds me of the cover of “Imperial Eyes”, a good book on the imperial lens in Eurocentric travel writing. You can see this same thing today in China, Nepal, elsewhere around Asia, especially around “holy mountains” where US tourists would have to climb lots of steps and switchback trails, except that frankly the size difference between the Asian carrier and the white person being carried has grown more dramatic.
